We are an upscale children’s photography studio in Lincoln Square looking for an intern to help us out with Administrative Work & Portrait Retouching (primarily) and Design Work (secondarily) and some Photography (eventually). Typical tasks are answering phones, corresponding with clients, booking appointments, assisting clients in ordering appointments, retouching portraits, packaging orders for clients, laying out images & text for holiday cards and birth announcements, and possibly, down the road, doing some actual photography sessions.

Miscellaneous tasks include some framing, light cleaning, and assisting with odd jobs when needed. This is a part-time, paid internship (minimum of 3 months), but if we are a good fit for each other, it would be lovely to have you stay on as an assistant. It’s VERY important that you are comfortable around kids and babies (and that you pretty much adore them). We’d also love it if you are a positive people-person with a strong work ethic, and of course, you should have a well-groomed appearance.

Skills should include good to great experience with Adobe’s Creative Suite. Graphic Designers will be considered with priority. We’ll teach you portrait retouching, but you need to have basic to intermediate knowledge of Photoshop. Photographic skills are helpful but not necessary. (If you are awesome with kids, we will teach you photography.) Any customer service experience or past work in reception or administrative duties is ideal. You should have strong attention to detail. Great spellers get extra gold stars. We’re looking for someone who is always NICE and always professional.

Some details: the internship pays $8.25-10 an hour to start, pay to increase if you stay on as an assistant. Part-time, 2 days a week–Saturdays are a MUST (although not always necessary). As an assistant, employment can be extended to 3-4 days a week and possible health care benefits. Nokia is calling on designers to show off their talent in the search for the perfect design to pimp the Nokia Developer community.

Nokia’s new Lumia range stretches beyond the limits of what you have come to expect from a smartphone, and truly embraces design as a fundamental to great user experiences.

The Lumia range is the first to be powered by Windows Phone software and incorporates a slick user interface, created using the unique Metro Style design inspired by Bauhaus. It is super intuitive and makes for fluid interactivity and lightning-fast connectivity driving the experience of Easier-Faster-Funner.

Springleap and Nokia have come together to bring you a contest bursting with vibrant colour and intense creativity.

Springleap designers will get the chance to help grow the Nokia Developer community by visualizing and expressing the ‘personality’ of the app developers through the design brilliance of the new Lumia.

Nokia is looking for developers to “Illuminate the Lumia” by getting involved with creating amazing apps for these award winning new smartphones.

Show us your vision of the Lumia, Windows Phone and most importantly Nokia Developer, as they illuminate a whole new world of possibilities!

YOUR MISSION:

The main focus of this design contest is to inspire the Nokia Developer base by creating a t-shirt design that appeals to app developers and illustrates what being a Nokia Developer is all about. Nokia Developers are proud technologists, but are trendy and adventurous. They live life fully and translate their adventure experiences into great apps and games.

People should see your t-shirt design and instantly recognize the wearer as a Nokia Developer or associate it with the brand.

Show us your vision of the Lumia, Windows Phone and Nokia Developer. Always keep in mind that your design must include 3 important aspects:

1. Lumia (illuminate/light/Metro Style/Bauhaus)
2. Imagination (new ideas/innovation/smart apps/inspiration/outside the box/infographics)
3. Mobile (experience & device)
THE BRIEF:

Designers are asked to create submissions that incorporates the above-mentioned aspects: “Lumia + Imagination + Mobile”.
The new Nokia Lumia range incorporates the unique Metro Style design into both the overall brand, as well as its user interface, to simplify its navigation and give it a clean modern look.

Designers may use the Metro Style design when creating their artwork, either as an inspiration or as the basis of their designs. You have complete freedom to create and express your concept for the perfect Nokia Developer t-shirt!

What do you surround yourself with visually, musically, creatively, or even just for fun?

“I love this question! There are so many things I love to surround myself with that make me feel creative. For instance, I love the beach, the ocean, anything summer, so I usually have something that reminds me of that around. Summer comes very slow to Chicago, so I always need a picture of the summer sun to help me feel warm. I have watercolor paintings of sea shells in my room and a jar of seashells and rocks on my shelf. I also make sure I have some of my favorite books around, which currently are my Harry Potter books–I adore the series! For music, anything dance or upbeat. I don’t want to listen to sad and slow songs while creating something; it will make me lose my energy.  But if I have some really good, upbeat music that has me wanting to dance, then I can create for hours. I also love to read short stories online. For me, that gets my imagination running, and I start thinking about my own projects and  what I can do with them.”

What is your favorite step in the process of making an Animation?

“My favorite step would be coming up with the idea. I love being able to discuss my projects with friends and teachers to get another person’s opinion. It really helps me grow. I may like my character to have something specific, but another person would disagree with me. It’s a process of trying to find a balance with your idea. As I talk to more and more people, I find new ideas to add to my story and old ideas that could be added to a new story. It’s almost like a journey. It’s you and the character running around in circles trying to understand one another. We’ve all had that one character who has told us what they do and don’t like. Every animator has an imagination, and with an imagination comes a whole lot of different worlds.”

Learning animation techniques can be tough, especially in the 3D world.  What’s your secret to overcoming the tough stuff?

“I don’t let myself get down about these things. I may complain and scream in my pillow and want to kick a wall in but I keep moving forward. I think of it like this, every single animator, whether one is new to animation or a professional in the industry, has had or is currently having a problem with learning a different animation technique. No one is perfect, I have had instructors who have been teaching these skills for years forget how to do something. It’s totally normal and it happens. I just tell myself, “I will get it the next time and if I don’t then I just have to keep trying, keep practicing, keep believing. If you lose faith in yourself then you lose faith in your skills. It’s new and it takes a while for something new to sink in. You’re just starting to learn these things, it takes practice and ambition to learn. Never give up hope.” Smile, laugh, take a break, watch Doctor Who, like I do, and then go back and see what you can do.”

Once you finish school here, what’s next?  What do you have in mind for your future?

“Well, at first I wanted to try my hand at 2D animation. I love 2D so much, and I would love to be able to work in the industry and do that. But I found something so much better for myself. I found my calling, what I’m meant to do. I want to teach. I want to teach art, teach 2D animation, and reach out and help those who want to expand their imagination like I do. I have a lot of patience and I love working with children, so I think I could do it. I’m going to start off small. I would like to teach children and teenagers how to draw and use simple programs. After a while, I think I will go back to school and aim for my Master’s, so I can work with college students. That way I can work on some of my own work and not feel so closed in. I’ll be free to do my own thing and still help out. My dream, ever since I was a kid, was to help make people laugh, smile and just be happy. I can do that with my art, I can do that helping kids learn, I can do that by being a positive influence in a child’s life and helping them grow.”

CHCF is interested in depicting health data in new and inventive ways. To further this goal, it is mounting its first health data design competition — The Picture of Health: A Data Design Challenge. Successful entrants will creatively explore how CHCF might present this data in a compelling and comprehensive manner, targeting policymakers and the public.

Entrants must use portions of the provided data sources in the design presentations. The source materials include a sampling of the data behind the 2011 edition of CHCF’s annual California Health Care Almanac report Health Care Costs 101, as well as the published report itself, to understand the progression from data collection to presentation. Two extracts from the National Health Expenditures data set, covering 1960 to 2009, are also provided. Applicants are encouraged to use other data as appropriate. Entries can be interactive (on any digital platform) or static (PDF pages).

Awards are:

• First Place: $5,000
• Second Place: $3,000
• Third Place: $1,000
• Honorable Mentions (two): $500

Entries will be judged on these criteria:

• Creativity (40%): Is the submission inventive? Interesting? Fun? Does it incorporate additional appropriate data sources?
• Education (30%): Does the submission help make health data more understandable to policymakers and the public?
• Presentation (30%): Does the submission present data in a compelling or elegant fashion?
