This time around, we’re challenging you to design a Cute Monster t-shirt that represents the essence of “cute.” Think of a design that is endearing, delightful, humorous, and charming. “Cute” is the anti-monster – something that brings a smile to your face. This contest is not about gore or macabre. If you saw a Cute Monster under your bed, you’d want to hug it instead of shrieking in terror. The adorable possibilities are endless!

In case you don’t know, the AIGA is the professional organization for graphic designers across the United States.  They have workshops, lectures and lots of other benefits for members who sign up.  One really great benefit is the job board where you can find graphic design jobs.

You also get some pretty great stuff in the mail.  For example the will send you the annual salary survey and a book on professional practices such as contracts and copyright.  Finally, there are a ton of discounts on things such as fedex and lynda.com among other things.

I asked her a few questions:

Do you have a creative background?  Or how did you get into Art/Design in the first place?
As a kid, I drew graffiti art, played instruments, and wrote a lot of poetry. In High School, I originally chose to take Graphic Design, but was placed in Culinary Arts. I learned a lot about how art can be applied to food that we eat. When a spot opened up for Graphic Communication, I took it. It ended up benefiting me, because everything I learned about Adobe Programs, and print production has helped me in Westwood.

Where do you draw inspiration for your design solutions?  Where do your ideas come from?
I try to understand what the project theme is, and what my expectations are, and base all of my decisions around that. My ideas pop out during my commute home, or my downtime when I have an opportunity to reflect on the flaws or successes of my designs.

You’re about half-way through the Bachelors Program here…what, so far, has been your favorite project for a class?
My favorite projects were my video projects for Audio/Video class. I can’t choose one. They were all really great. I feel like I am able to show my true potential in 3 minutes of a video, rather than a design.

What’s your long-term plan?  What do you want to be doing 10 years from now?
I still want to continue my education by taking Digital Animation and Video Effects, and IT. I really want to base myself around art and technology, how it works, and what I can do with all of it.

Pete Wentz has just announced the “POWER” T-Shirt Design Challenge with the five winning designs awarded $1,000 each. Former Fall Out Boy bassist Wentz (currently involved with the experimental electropop group Black Cards) and MASScanvas teamed up for the contest which asks fans to design “POWER” themed T-shirts.

“Maybe it’s not the typical public perception of power… but I’m talking about the power that everyone has within them,” explained Wentz in the official announcement. “To me what separates the top designs from all the rest is one where you can see that the person put their heart into it. You can see that they really believe in the grander idea.”

The Details:

“Starting Wednesday, February 1, fans can submit designs for the “POWER” challenge until February 29th at masscanvas.com. ALL entries will be featured on masscanvas.com. Entrants and fans can comment on designs throughout the challenge and VOTE for the top 20 designs. On March 22, Pete Wentz will choose 5 winning tees (each receiving a $1,000 cash prize), from the top 20, which he feels best represent the theme. The 5 winning tees will be printed in limited quantity, individually hand-numbered, and sold in support of the charitable cause.”
